MOCK PUBLIC SUICIDES LEAVE POTTER'S HOUSE BANNED FROM MALL - SEPTEMBER 2006

A poster on google groups reports coming across a Potters House church street outreach through theatre team which was performing in the 'Manners Mall' in Wellington, New Zealand several years ago. The poster, Calum Bennarchie, typed "When Potters House did their mock hangings in Manners Mall on a saturday morning a few years ago.....there was...a flurry of complaints to the Wellington city council about their behaviour.

They had a group of people who came up one by one saying things like 'I've had an abortion and committed a sin against God. I deserve to die' and then hanging herself. They didn't do lesbians or other queer folk, just us gay guys. The woman with an abortion occured just as a bunch of young {aged 7?} kids were walking past after being at something or other with their mothers. She hanged herself right in front of them. Kiddies screaming, general mayhem, mothers shouting at the pastor. It was probably them who complained. They are not as far as I'm concerned allowed to do any more street theatre in Wellington."

This is only one of many disturbing reports that have come out regarding the deliberately militant nature of Potters House street outreach. What concerns me even more is that this group actually seem proud of the controversy they cause. The idea of people committing suicide including homosexuals and saying thaty they deserve to die is a clear incitement to homophobic violence. It says a lot about the mentality behind this group. Any sane and moral person would surely find such behaviour reprehensible.
